Is there a way to record TV shows on my Mac in AVI formate like recording a DVD? Thanks for any help.

Right now I have a DVI output for my Mac book and the split wire for Audio. I can watch movies from my mac to TV but Can I record on my Mac?

Would it be better to invest in one that connects by a firewire? Know anyone that does connect witha firewire?
