Mac wakes from sleep due to external hard drive

Hi,
I bought an external hard drive and I have a problem with it. If I don't eject it before putting it to sleep then my MacBook will turn right back on and complain that it wasn't ejected properly. If I unmount the partitions before going to sleep then it turns back on but I don't get the warning message. Any ideas on what I should do?
