Are there any companies that sell warranty protection for my macbook after the 3 year applecare term expires?

I've heard there are some but warranting +3-year old computer is pretty useless as it's gonna cost you a pretty $. Other than manufacturer's warranty is also a risk because they may not have the knowledge needed.

You're better off selling it after two years and buying a new one with AppleCare

yes - there is coverage after AppleCare expires!

If you purchased your Mac on your American Express card, you automatically get an extra year's warranty on your laptop. Not necessarily from Apple Support, however, if you have a hardware problem, AMEX takes care of it. In other words, instead of 3 years, you automatically have 4 years.
