I need to transfer large files across both platforms

Yes, so long as you stick with standard formats and avoid proprietary formats. On the Mac side, the Finder, Disk Utilities, iTunes, and iDVD just work.

The one thing that seems to be iffy sometimes is multisession DVDs.

Also, of course, any CD or DVD that was made using one of those programs that lets you "use your DVD like a big hard disk" (i.e. you can drag and drop files one at a time without having to click a "burn" button) will usually not work, unless maybe you finalize it (and then still maybe not with DVDs).
