Mac/Windows partitioned hard drive.

Hey there ive been doing a bit of searching but i cant find exactly what i am after. I Have a 500gb WD hard drive and i just want to know if it is possible to partition the hard drive into two and have mac extended journaled on one partition and ntfs on the other partition. I dont want to transfer between windows and mac i just want to use 50gb of my harddrive to transfer between macs. i have read that you can just use msdos FAT but i have also heard that it has a high corruption rate and that you cant store files larger than 4gb on there. Some advise would be appreciated. Thanks
