I've been having issues where I thought that an El Capitan update was crashing my system in that it stuck on the loading screen, but have just realised that it's not stuck on the install screen but on the Mac Startup screen with the grey/white screen, apple logo and progress bar.

I can restore from time machine but as soon as the computer shuts down it won't start up again, so I have to make sure it only goes to sleep and never shuts down. I tried installing Sierra to see if this solves it but it installs then freezes again on the startup screen with the progress bar neatly complete.

I've tried to start in safe mode with verbose and get the following screen. If I leave it I just get the last lines repeating over and over as shown by the second photo.

Any idea what the issue is? Is it a hardware issue? TBH I've been getting the spinning beachball more and more over the last few months, as well as had it running hot all the time, and have been half expecting it it die on me.

Any help appreciated.
