Mac won't restart or shutdown

Hello,

I just started having some problems with my late 2006 24" iMac and they're still happening after updating to 10.5.7.

I think the problem centers around Front Row because Disk Utility reports disk permission errors related to Front Row. Repairing permissions is reported as successful but the problem still persists. For whatever reason Front Row stopped working the other day. Nothing (Command-Escape, Rowmote ln my iPod Touch, etc...) would get it to launch. I tried reinstalling Front Row and no dice.

Then yesterday I had an instance where my iMac wouldn't restart of shut down. I was forced to hold the power button down to fix it. It happened again today. I couldn't restart or shutdown but everything else seemed to work except Front Row and there was a spinning beachball when I moved the mouse cursor to the top right-hand corner of the screen (where some of the menu items are). Before forcing a reboot by pressing the power button this time I thought to check the Console. Here's what I saw, essentially repeating, over and over:

It appears that if I fix this issue I not only won't get these odd "can't restart or shutdown" dilemmas any longer but Front Row should work as well, at least I hope so. I just got Tech Tool 5 if that will be of any help. Any help would be much appreciated.

Normally I would suggest repairing permissions first, but you have done that
So, you might want to try the following...

1. Reset the PRAM

2. Boot from the install DVD and verify your disk

3. Archive and install OSX from the install DVD

I'll give it a shot when I get home. I have a Time Machine backup but I guess restoring from that wouldn't solve the problem because it would still be there?

You can go back in time to a point where things were working correctly
That is part of the beauty of Time Machine

I don't know much about Front Row (don't use it) or how much it has to do with your problem, but whenever I've had problems restarting or logging out, I launch the Activity Monitor, highlight "loginwindow", and quit the process. That does the trick for me. I've had to do it on my Mac Pro, iMac, and just this morning on the mini.

It might come in handy for you some time.

I discovered the issue. Turns out it was some plugins I d/l for Front Row. Front Row doesn't really support plugins that well like Boxee and Plex does. It was either the EyeTV or new Hulu one (for the new desktop app) somebody made. I deleted them and all the problems vanished. :)

It's no big deal because I'm able to launch those apps other ways. I just like tinkering.
