Mac Word Numbering and Headings

I am writing a thesis in Word (I know there are much better software, but I'm stuck with this for now).

I'm using numbering like this
1
1.1
1.2
1.2.1
etc.

My problem is with the 1. My thesis is in chapters, so now it says
1 Chapter 1, a bit repetitive. I want to get rid of the 1 in the front, but still have the rest of the document number correctly (as if the 1 was still there).

I'm using Word 2008

Any help will be appreciated.
