I recently added the iShockX Macally controller on my iMac (OS10.6.6) I downloaded the correct driver from the Macally website, and the install was reported successful and the color icon was added to my System Preferences window.

However, the controller is not being recognized by the game I have been playing previously with my keyboard (Battlestations:pacific for Mac). None of the Macally buttons have any effect (the mode is on digital, the USB port works).

When I try to open the Macally icon in the Finder's System Prefs, I get the following message: "To use the “iShockX Manager” preferences pane, System Preferences must quit and reopen."

I have tried quitting preferences as requested with no effect. The same message keeps popping up. It still keeps showing up after I try to open it following restarts and shutdowns and a lot of cussing.

Has anyone else experienced or better yet solved this problem? Or should I return the Macally controller and continue to try and master the very complex keyboard maneuvers for winning major naval sea battles using planes, ships and submarines all at the same time?

Not all that many OS X games are programmed to use gamepads, even when their Windows counterparts are. I'd try in bootcamp.

If it doesn't work in a game that you're sure uses gamepads (or a mapping utility like gamepad companion), I would recommend the 360 controller with the 3rd party driver over pretty much every other USB gamepad ever made, though.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick and thorough reply, bmb012.

I have returned the Macally and ordered the 360 controller as a replacement. In fact, the 360 is the one "Battlestations" had pictured in their User Guide, which, of course, I was not aware of until I got the product.

All the best.
