My cursor has been freezing up continuously on my 2016 12” MacBook for the past week. I have to press a bunch of buttons and wait for 15-20 seconds for it to unlock. It started with once or twice a day, now it is up to 7or 8. I reformatted and set up as new, reset the PRAM and SMC.
It is not program dependent, and there are no errant or high running processes. It does it in Safari and Spotify, all kinds of programs.
I did my updates and it’s still happening.
Not using any external mice or keyboards.
Any ideas? I’m out of warranty and worried it might be hardware.

I had this happen on mine (2015 12" first gen Retina BTO / CTO) and Apple support said to turn off the Mac, press and hold the power button for over 60 seconds.
Voila - revived the Mac and haven't had any issues since.

It's my first butterfly keyboard Mac and it's used as a travel laptop...

The first time I experienced the cursor freezing problem was a few years ago when upgrading my 2015 15" MacBook Pro from El Capitan to Sierra (or High Sierra). That went on for a while - and made me avoid upgrading for a long while. Then the issue subsided for quite some time - until recently upgrading to Mojave. Now, I'm experiencing the, highly annoying, cursor freezing issue periodically throughout the day (including typing this post).
