Macbook 13" 2007 Backlight dies/hard drive sleeps when battery inserted?

Like stated above, the screen dies(backlight) and hard drive sleeps when I put my new battery in. So i'm stuck sitting at the desk whenever I need to use my mac. I had it in one time without the screen dying, but the mac wasn't recognizing the battery and had the "X".
Battery is brand new:confused:
