Hey -
I've been fighting with my MacBook 2,1 (late 2006) for the past couple days. I'm trying to fix it up for my brother, as I recently installed a different hard drive to replace the new one that had catastrophically failed.
I have no idea how, now that I think about it in-depth, but the machine was running 10.6.8.
Earlier today I finally managed to install 10.6.3 from one of my DVDs, but it turns out to be intended for a 15" MBP. The MacBook worked perfectly fine for most of the day, but as of a few hours ago it does nothing but kernel panic on boot. SUM tells me there is no driver for the MacBook 2,1 platform, surprise surprise (but how was it working before?!)
I've tried to install 10.6.0, 10.6.3, and 10.7.4 thus far. Oh, I should mention - I don't think this machine's optical drive works properly / at all, so I've been trying to boot and install via a 16GB Corsair Voyager flash drive.
Sure, restoring the image through Disk Utility works, and the machine recognized all 3 different images as bootable throughout this process...but 10.6.0 causes kernel panic after a few minutes, while 10.6.3 and 10.7.4 simply sit on the Apple screen (with no tick wheel) indefinitely.
In short - anything I do to try to re-install OS X on this MacBook results in kernel panic or hanging at boot.
I'm a computer technician, but I'm a bit baffled as to why all my resources seem to be failing. In case I missed or overlooked something, I thought I'd post here.
So...any ideas as to why I cannot install Mac on my Mac?
