Hi,

First post, looking to buy the new Macbook Pro i7 15", I currently have 2.5ghz I7 Macbook Pro 2014 and its incredibly slow now. I was wondering what you would recommend getting? The 2.2ghz version or 2.6ghz version?

Thanks

What tasks/programs will you be using?

I'm very happy with the 2.2, I saved money and I have a fast machine, but my needs may not align with how you need the laptop

I work on Premiere and Photoshop daily and usually have many tabs open for work.

What exactly do you use it for? Just curious as I am trying to figure out if its worth saving the money

Lightroom, photoshop, office apps, some surfing web stuff, and work related. Connecting remotely to servers and my desktop in the office.

Also, any thoughts for someone who is a full stack web developer? Node.js, grunt, local servers, etc. And would a 13” i7 work?

Premiere is a dog on MacBooks compared to FCP. Better optimized for windows and Nvidia. Premier is jerky as heck on my 2015 15 MBP. Same project is fine on my Windows deskside with GTX 1070s.

I'm trying to decide between those two as well. Now the i9 is effectively ruled out due to the thermal throttling issues, the i7 seems to be the way to go. I use Logic Pro X as well as DaVinci Resolve and my mid 2010 13" MBP just doesn't keep up anymore. I even had to borrow my brother PC to run Resolve. I am off to Uni in a couple months and am looking to purchase the new Pro 15" in the next 1-2 weeks. Also wondering whether its worth upgrading to 32Gb RAM? As unfortunantely they are now no longer upgradeable aftermarket.... Will most likely be going 2TB storage for large 4K projects I reckon. Any need to go larger do you think?

Do you need a $5K machine for your major? Especially when you're upgrading from a 8 year old MBP?

I've been "making do" with this MBP for a long time now. Upgrading it, rebuilding the software etc. It's time to replace it now. In the UK, it would be between £3,419 and £4,139 depending on what I end up going for. But for the amount I'm doing outside and along side my music business and production course, it is very much justifiable.

then this new machine better last you 10 years lol.

I'm doing full stack on the 15" 2.2ghz base model. No problems at all. Previous I had the 2017 base 15" as well. No problems using any of that. I'm also running Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.
