Hello,

I've recently been given a macbook 2007 2.16Ghz, it had windows on when i got it which i promptly removed, but when trying to boot using a USB drive containing an OS X image or using an OS X disk it gets to the installer and then just cuts out, i even tired mounting an install disk on the hard-drive and tried to boot from that but it doesn't even see the bootable partition.
Any ideas?

If by "mounting" you mean opening a disk image, that's not enough. You need to create a new partition to boot from.

I'm not sure about your other issue, though. Could be an optical drive problem.

've created a new partition, as an apple partition map, and guid partition map and mounted the install disk to it, it sees it when its a usb device but not as an internal harddrive. and the optical drive is fine

By the way,
I sorted this, i changed the themal paste on the cpu and gave the insides a general clean up
