I have this modified 2012 MacBook pro, upgrade ssd 1tb, and 16gb of ram. I have been using this to rip dvd's and storing videos. However, a few days ago, the mac started "freezing". The quicktime program would spin endlessly and needing force quit (this lasted for a days). All of a sudden it froze and I had to force a restart. The mac would show a circle with a slash upon starting. I would force another restart and the mac would slowly restart.

BUT it no longer ask me to enter a my security login password.

And when I attempt to transfer files, the computer would ultimately freeze (this is my main reason for using the computer is coping my physical media and transfer them to another drive.

I tested it by watching several episodes of a show and it work (watching videos). Safari works.

But again, the computer no longer ask me for a security login password, and the whole computer freezes when transferring files.

Could this be the ram failing?

The SSD is obviously new but is the ram the culprit?

I ran first aid and the test showed nothing is wrong with the laptop....

Being that you’ve tried the First Aid, I’d give a formal resetting of the NVRAM/PRAM a shot or having activity monitor running in the background to see if you can spot a culprit before it freezes again. If you don’t have any luck, you might be able to do a recovery reinstall. Possibly some corrupt system files.

Omg it worked. The password login showed up! So what does this mean then? Is my ram failing?

Glad it worked. Could be an isolated incident that just happened to pop up or could be the beginnings of a logic board issue or a HD issue. Keep an eye on it.

Oh dang. The HD is brand new, it's an ssd. Hmmmm. Best be prepared.
Given the age and history of logic board/graphics issues I’d say it’s possible it could be the logic board then. I had a 2011 experience similar issues. Mine slowly lost functionality over time. Best to keep an eye on things
