MacBook 2016 - dark stripes down screen

My 2016 MacBook has developed some vertical stripes on the screen that are darker than the rest of the screen. They get lighter/darker with the screen brightness control. The stripe was half the width until recently. And it’s not always there.

I’m thinking this could be a backlight issue, but has anyone else seen the same problem? Or possibly a problem with the display cables?
