This past Friday I picked up a 2016 MacBook m5 Rose Gold at Best Buy for $659. That's $440 off the sale price and $940 off the regular price. It was Open Box but in perfect condition. I decided to have it replace my 2014 Mac mini 1.4 GHZ i5 with a 500GB SSD (I installed the SSD).
While I was setting up my MacBook which took no time at all, I decided to run tests, left my Mac mini hooked up and did different programs. I was surprised to see that the MacBook beat the Mac mini in everything besides basic email, web browsing, etc.
So I now have my MacBook m5 docked on my 12 South Bookarc and plugged to my monitor. Overall it just feels so much faster than my Mac mini. I myself was one of those people that ripped on the MacBook for lack of specs, but I now call it the little engine that can and will. I'm very impressed by the speed and all that I can do. Tested converting 4K video, very surprised that it can handle it. Played around with Android Studio & Xcode and compiling my app was quicker on the MacBook over the Mac mini. I'm sure it has to with 4th vs 6th get Intel processor also.
But anyone who has doubts about the MacBook, don't have them. It's a solid machine that can handle very well. My Geekbench 4 app scored 3330 in Single-Core & 6390 in Multi-Core. So it beat my Mac mini 200 & 600 respectfully. And I've heard this years 2017 MacBook is even more powerful. For anyone who doesn't need Pro ability which to me is border-line because I do Localhost work, app development, photo editing & video editing and have had zero issues on the MacBook so far. So from a development stand-point, the MacBook is solid. No over-heating issues at all.
