Hi;

I am trying to help my Nephew with his Mackbook. (Macbook 2017). He bought it recently off of Ebay and it has worked fine, however just recently the fan comes on high (and noisy) and it gets really slow to the point of being unusable.

I checked that he has been shutting it down and when I called him just now on his phone, nothing else is running apart from Finder and Chrome.
It is not warm to touch.

I have sent him the details for resetting SMC and NVRAM which he has done a few times.

I cannot think of anything else to try apart from getting him to open it up and blow it out?

Could a thermal sensor be faulty? If so is this a new Mobo?

Thanks for any help

The 2017 MacBook is fanless, so obviously it is a MacBook Pro so might be better asking in the MacBook Pro forum.

But the obvious other things to try are:

Look in Activity Monitor to see if there is a background process using high CPU.
Download and run Etrecheck will give a full report on the machine.
Running First Aid in Disk Utility (prob best from Recovery but you can do it live)
Safe Boot clears caches
Run Apple Diagnostics to check for hardware faults (restart holding D key)
