EDIT : Seems I was wrong . . . after a couple of intended shut downs and cold bootups . . the problem persists. Very odd seeing that for more than 11 hours ( longest uptime to date) there were no black screens. I will not give up on this.
============================================================
Last year wife's MacBook 3,1 Core2Duo A1181 10K549 ( OS X 10.6.8 ) suddenly developed the ubiquitous " Black Screen" ; screen is very dark but one can just see the Desktop. On the Net most of the experts talk about replacing the inverter + video cable.
Disclaimer : This solution has only worked on this particular MacBook.
I offer no guarantees for other later models.
Over the past few months I tried endless possible solutions including using the Terminal to completely turn off sleep.
Nothing worked satisfactorily until tonight. Maddening
I live close to a famous Japanese shrine ( Shimogamo Jinjur ) and as a last resort . .walking past this shrine this morning I threw a half hearted appeal to the old Japanese pagan gods for inspiration.
They seem to have delivered !
My solution: Just in case my solution was a fluke
please set Energy Saver settings exactly as I have in the pics bellow.
They can be refined at leisure later.
=====================================
It may well be that OSX 10.6.8 default Energy/Sleep settings have a bug related to early Intel MacBook architecture . Perhaps utilising the "Sleep/Wake? Scheduler over rides something that HAS BEEN causing the MacBook to go into sleep mode about every 3 minutes.
Since applying these settings this MacBook seems back to normal in every way except that using the Scheduler to tell the MacBook sleep ONLY on Tuesday at 5 am - I'm usually fast asleep.
So far the MacBook has been constantly "ON" with a lovely bright screen for the past 10 hours - a record ! There's life in this old friend yet.
I would appreciate it if anyone with a similar MacBook with the Black Screen problem could try this solution and post results. This problem has plagued our MacBooks for far too long with no help from Apple.
If this is not a lasting solution as least it can be ruled out but so far I feel confident.

1 Go to System Preferences/Energy Saver
