MacBook 3,1 Overheating

I have an old 15" 3,1 macbook pro that has been a solid performer for ages now - and with what I do with it, haven't had any real need to upgrade.

However, over the last few months the area near the magsafe connector has been getting rather hot under normal to high use.


Is this typical, or is this a sign that it might be time to get a new one?

Most likely just means that it's using the power adaptor for more of it's power because the battery doesn't hold as much of a charge. Probably not an issue.

Recommend then that I source a new battery for it?

Does apple even still sell spare batteries?

If you need to use it on battery, then yeah, go ahead.
