I have an early 2008 black macbook and about a week ago after shutting it the superdrive started to make continuous clicking noises. I opened it back up and it continued while remaining asleep, i pressed the eject button and nothing happened so i restarted it. When i turned it on the apple logo wasn't there, instead there was a folder icon with a question on it. After hitting the macbook it worked(bad idea i know, but i worked). I just did the same thing, What is happening. Do i need to clean the superdrive, i cleaned my macbook yesterday which brought the temperature down 30 degrees(it was running at 150F with the fans a 5000+rpm, now at 120F and 1700+rpm)

Any ideas? Im good at cleaning it, so cleaning the superdrive is no problem

Are you sure it is the SuperDrive (CD/DVD write drive)?

The clicking sound and folder with question mark sound more like a failing HDD to me.

The HDD is located under your left palm while you use your fingers to press the keys on the keyboard.

It's the superdrive, I can feel it clicking when i put my hand on it.
I used a stethoscope to find the sound, its the superdrive.
