If I had to do it again I'd max out the ram from the get-go.
What makes black plastic worth $200 over white?
I usually start looking again when the latest Mac is roughly twice as fast as the one I'm using.

Mac 6500 (The heart of darkness Mac) (the X took it in the divorce. Cruel? Hell Yes!)
