Hi everyone,
I received my 2020 Macbook Air last week, and have been using it daily. Overall I love it. I got the i7 16 GB 1 TB configuration. The i7 mainly to keep it relevant in the years to come, as I am retiring a 2012 Macbook Air, lol.. Have a habit of holding onto my computers for a long time.
When I purchased this model it was out of need- as my trackpad was not working on the older computer, as well as the hard drive was having problems recognizing and working with the external mouse. Couldn't get anything done with ease and definitely could not wait for a Macbook Pro update.
So my thoughts and question-
My use-
I use this computer daily for working online. Lots of zoom video meetings, some zoom conferences, classes- (some have 20-30 people), and otherwise, emailing, facetime, general browsing. I do upload to youtube, as well as watch netflix and youtube. I do use slack and spotify at times, but haven't been using it on this computer too much yet. I guess i should try them out?
Overall- it's been great- I do not notice it getting hot, the fan (except in some cases that I will mention below) does not go- even during most zoom meetings. It did come on in one of my larger meetings yesterday for a few minutes, and when I was downloading a recording from zoom to computer when I forgot to put it on cloud. Its fast, its responsive. The speakers are great- the webcam sucks lol.. I love it. BUT... I do have a question
Fan- Zoom Screen Sharing- In some of my classes I do have to screen share, or sometimes with one on one clients- It seems that the fan immediately goes on- and stays one while I am screen sharing through zoom. It's quite loud, although not picked up on recording, and the computer does not seem to get super hot.. just the fan goes.. I have not noticed this in normal zoom meetings, even when my screen is big. Is this something long term that I need to be concerned about? Or that will cause problems over time? It is interesting as I tried after that meeting last night- to screen share on a call with my husband and the fan didn't come on at all? Yet in the 2 meetings with other clients- the fan did come on for both in the screen share.
The only other time the fan has come on has been in one of the meetings, and when I was doing a voice recording one time- also in set up..
I have a week to return this computer- and really don't want too.. but also want the best computer for my needs. If I do this- my only other choice is to order the 16 inch Pro as my old computer truly is done.. i can't wait a few more months for a smaller new Pro to come out/be sent- and I don't want the old keyboards of the current pro. I did read that zoom screen share causes lots of computer fan's to go- so maybe it would even do so on a Pro?
So wondering about your thoughts re: the fan with the processes I am using it for.. and whether its better to upgrade.. or to enjoy this computer with a little noise in certain situations?
As stated before- my main uses-
zoom conference calls, zoom meetings, email, some voice recording, occasional videos uploaded to you tube, and general browsing. I do use it most of the workday all day.
Thank you so much for any advice- As I said overall I am very happy..
And I would definitely say its rose gold- not gold lol.. but I do like the colour. :)

Just an FYI my 2015 15" MBP and 2017 15" MBP both have their fans spin way up when I have in a Zoom meeting with video and screen sharing.

Thank you! This is what I was wondering.. Because I love everything else about the Air.. and the fans don't come on otherwise- and it doesn't seem to run hot!! I appreciate your insight!

I haven't tried mine yet, its still on the way. However I have a 2015 mbp i7/16gb, yesterday I tested Zoom with a single tab open, no other apps, and 1 zoom meeting going on with about 15 people. My temps were touching 99/100c and my fan was ramping up to 5/6000. This is on a macbook pro which is supposed to be "pro" right? I think alot of these apps are just poorly optimized for mac regardless of what its running on. I've seen some people trash the new air because the temps go hot or fans go up too loud with zoom, well this just shows it happens even on the "pro" machines too. I wonder if alot of the issues people are having with these machines can be addressed in future firmware/software updates. Its possible that my 2015 MBP needs to have the thermal paste changed. And on the flip side on the Air, it may have a improperly applied thermal paste which is causing issues for some and not others. Part of the airflow design from the fans has a chamber inside of the case that is removed to direct the air.

Wonderful insight again.. thank you. This is what I was hoping to hear... not that I want Macs to perform badly with zoom.. but just that it was normal for fans to come on with the sharing or some of the programs.. My zoom so far- has been great on this.. only came up in one meeting that was 20 plus people and only for a few minutes.. All other meetings either one on one- or up to 10 have been fan free:)

And its a beautiful computer- I love it! So feeling better after both these responses so far! Thank you!

And enjoy your new computer when it comes!

Thats great to hear. I'm actually hoping to retire a even older machine than yours, a 2010 iMac i3. Its held up well for me for the past 10 years and I'm the same way keeping a machine for a long time. I'm hoping the Air works out for me, because its the weight I want, otherwise I'll go to a 16". I've personally never ran temp tests, monitored the CPU's or even ran geekbenches on this iMac I use daily. I did run a geek bench the other day and the results were pretty laughable with a multicore score being lower than the single core score on the Air! I use this machine pretty heavily and thrown alot at it.

Wow- 2010.. I did have a 2011 MBP that I did use for my back up for the other one.. but was so slow sometimes.. so letting both of those goes :) I hope the Air works for you too- that is the main reason why I didn't go for the 16 inch in the fall- as my computer was already acting up then (the trackpad and something else related to it.. cause the mouse didn't always work either)... But the 16 inch seems to be overkill for me.. and I love the size- and colour of the air (I got gold lol).. And yes- I don't run tests either- have no idea about this stuff.. but the new Air seems to work great- except for screen sharing re: zoom.. I figure if its for 90 mins once week or so- it should be fine.. I have another week to try it out before the 14 days is up.. but that's the only thing that has concerned me.. I love it otherwise! Thanks again!

Thats funny, I will admit the gold was a big draw for me for this laptop, I ordered the same. :)

Can you show us the temperature, wattage, clock speed while you are using Zoom with Intel Power Gadget?

I could try? Never have done that before.. but maybe tonight with my husband I can? Although I tried to screen share with him yesterday- and the fan didn't come on lol.. Will see if I can in the next day or so.. I have another week before I have to make a final decision :)

I found this suggestion but I don’t see this setting in Zoom. Can someone else please confirm?

My sharing frame rate was averaging about 14 frames in the statistics page.

Wattage- package 7.96-10.95, core-3.87-6.87,
Clock Speed- max 3.4 , avg 2.3-2.6, req- 2- 2.99, gfx .23,

Fan just started after 5 minutes-
Temp is more around 90's 100 now that I have been on.

Will check normal levels when I get off..? would love insight- and thank you

As soon as I get off screen share temps drop to 70's/80's- wattage to pkg3-4 and core- 1-1.6, and gfx 3.3, 2, ,7, 1.6 and 0

Will get off zoom, and eat dinner and see what the numbers are just plain.

I sold a 1.4 GHz 12" 16 GB/512 before acquiring a 2020 Air i7/16/512. The Air is quite step up in performance for sure (and hasn't exhibited thermal issues in a week of use).

My second machine is a Mid-2012 2.3 GHz quad core i7 15" MBP with 16GB/1TB flash drive. Runs Mojave quite nicely... slight bit of lag here and there but overall quite impressive for a computer of that vintage!

I love my air- today was the last day I had to return it... and I love it.. the fan goes on sometimes when using it in very specific situations- but I think that is normal.. otherwise its cool- a great size- The speakers are amazing... and I love the colour!

So glad you are enjoying yours!

PSA: Definitely check the heat pipe thread. People have discovered a quick, easy, $20 heatsink mod that reduces heat and provides 10-15% more performance.

It looks like a must-do to me if you’re keeping your mba for 2+ years.

Oh I didn't see this- I will look :)

Ok- I will.. is the thread in the main forum? I definitely am keeping it for a long time (or plan too.. that is why I got the model I did).. Thanks

The thread is called 2020 air heatsink here on the mba section, page 35ish is where all the important stuff starts.

It’s really simple, basically the heatsink has an indentation in it (filled with a glob of thermal paste for no apparent reason). So people are putting in copper shims to good results.
