Hello,

Newbie here.

I have a Macbook Air late 2010 and the original magsafe 1 lasted 6 years and I had to change it last year. I bought a fake one for 30$ that lasted another year and died. That one was a 60 watts because that’s all they had at the time and they told me it doesn’t matter and would just recharge faster.

Last month I bought another fake one at the same place (45 watts this time) and it broke after 1 week... So I changed it again and it died on me again tonight... Always the same problem, the wire get loose and disconnect from the L type connector. Last time I went, the seller told me that they we’re fake (thus cheap) but even the genuine one from Apple weren’t that reliable either. After reading reviews It seem to be the case although my original magsafe 1 lasted a solid 6 years.

Anyway, long story short, the store where I bought It is close for a week for holidays so either I wait or buy another fake one elsewhere or a new one at Apple. Thing is I am pretty damn broke nowadays so I’ll probably wait the week and change it yet again (his warranty is 3 months).

Question 1: Should I buy a genuine one for 99$ or is it all the same in the end?

Also, I never had any problems so far, this MBA was/is pretty damn good even though its quite long in the tooth. But since 1-2 years, It becomes really hot, really fast and the battery last about 30 minutes. I never changed it, its the original one. It doesn’t really matter to me since I use it at home only and using it connected all the time is not a burden for me. Also, the fan comes on pretty fast and stays on pretty much all the time now. I can live with that.

Question 2: Does the fan on all the time now means my MBA is close to its natural death or does it have something to do with the battery being old? Or something else?

Again, I don’t mind having the laptop connected all the time but would a new battery makes the fan stops and cool my MBA?

Bottom line, I am really broke and would like to possibly get another 2-3 years out of it so where should I invest, if anything?

I obviously don’t know much about computers hence why I’m asking here before going to a repair place and be the gullible guy...

Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Firstly yes copies work ok, but tend not to last and some get very very hot and can catch fire.

if possible get a genuine.
I bought a used genuine off ebay and it still going!

I have a copy too but it alot lighter than a genuine and I will not use it unless I really have to.

If the machine is getting hot then possibly get the repair shop to clean the fans/heat exchanger and maybe new thermal compound on the CPU and GPU.

I tend replace the compound every 3-4 years as it can dry out and become less efficient.

I have genuine and fake chargers and knock-on-wood, both is been OK, I do take care that I don't make sharp bends on the cable. They should last at least 2 years. Whether you want to buy another fake charger is up to you, but based on your luck, u may not have much choice.

Next significant problem, the batt needs replacing soon, high temp is not a good sign, you should replace it with urgency. Unfortunately I don't think Macbooks let you run with no battery, totally disconnected. If buying third party batt and replace yourself, I suggest buy it from ifixit, they will refund you if it doesn't work.
