My niece has an MacBook Air M2 that she uses for college. She wants to use an older Dell screen just for some more screen real estate while working on school stuff. I got her this HDMI to Display port cable (screen only has Display Port, VGA an and DVI).

She has this hub

The dell screen is getting no signal. She is running latest OS updates and tried both of the USB C ports. Tried top option control on display settings and does not detect a screen. She said she tried going through the input options on the screen with no luck either. Could this be an issue with the cable or something else I am missing here?

Maybe; I would try with a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter and then a DP M-M cable.

It can't work. You did not get her an HDMI to DisplayPort cable but DisplayPort to HDMI cable. [no intention of sounding rude]
First line of the product description:
Connects a computer or devices with DisplayPort port to a monitor with HDMI input, transmit audio and video from computer to HD display. ✅ Attention: the displayport to hdmi adapter is uni-directional, not bi-directional.
When getting a cable, the first descriptor is Source, the second the Target. Bi-Directional cables work both ways.

So either get an HDMI to DisplayPort cable to use with the existing hub. Or HDMI to DVI.
Or, if she has a free USB-C port on the MacBook, directly a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

edit: Added DVI option in conjunction with the hub.
