I don't care much for my MacBook Air M2 especially the restrictions in the App Store. I want more "freedom"of choice as I have on my Mac mini. So I am thinking about the iMac with the M1 chip? Would this be a good selection or something else?

I don't know how freedom of choice will come in the same operating system but different hardware?

Then why would you go from M2 MBA to M1 iMac?

If I were you and I didn't want a laptop anymore then I would get a current iMac or an m4 Mac mini.

As far as App Store restrictions they would be the same pretty much with most Mac's. Get an iPhone or iPad if app restrictions are an issue on a Mac.

Maybe just keep what you have and figure out why there are restrictions, what can you do about them and then go from there?

Is your MacBook set to only allow apps from the App Store? Check the setting in Privacy & Security --> Allow Applications From and see what it's set to.

I have been looking at the iMac M4. I prefer the bigger display of the iMac over the Mac mini M4. So an iPad for more App choices or Mac for bigger display. Woe is me!

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I get it now. Thanks for the screen shot however. I guess I just liked the "olden times" when this app is not available never appeared.
