I like to use GarageBand to record and playback vocals. Is there a way to plug headphones into the MacBook Air and playback the live sound through the headphones from the mic. Basically I'm trying to use my MacBook as a ear monitor transmitter, so that I can sing and hear myself live through in-ear headphones.

With what mic? Built-in?

My experience (even with external audio devices) is that there is a profoundly distracting and annoying lag between your input and hearing yourself back on headphones. Do yourself a favor and get a nice USB mic with zero-latency built-in headphone out.

My favorite is just under $100 on Amazon.

I think you'd regret going pretty much any other route... I know I did.
