Is there anything that can be done/product recommendations to prevent the MacBook Air 15inch screen from getting keyboard marks when closing the laptop or is it something that will eventually happen no matter what long term?

You could buy a microfiber cloth cover for the keyboard.

is this an actual issue with current models? had my 13.6 inch for quite some time now, close it every day and have zero keyboard marks on the screen

It’s been my experience that a cloth over the keyboard when it’s in a bag or backpack (and leaving the lid slightly open on other occasions) does help, since I’ve never had to deal with keyboard marks on any of my laptops.
