I’m in the market for a new computer, and I’m torn between a iPad or MacBook.

I think I’m leaning towards a MacBook but after doing some research something is putting me off.

I seem to come across lots of people saying the clearance between the screen and keyboard isn’t enough, therefore a lot of people ending up with screen scratches and marks from the keyboard as they travel.

Can anyone share their experience with their MacBook and let me know if this is a real issue or something that’s blown out of proportion?

It definitely has enough clearance. If a laptop gets swished in a bag then you can end up with marks (that come right off when you clean the screen), but generally not scratches and that happens with pretty much all laptops.

I've traveled tons with my air and two different pros and my screens are perfectly fine.

The iPad is the tougher wearing option. The laptop like all laptops you do need to baby them as any dust or debris even dog hair can mark the screen.

I’m obsessive with mine and year later it’s still flawless… my wife’s on the other had has lots of marks and she abuses it by shoving it in bag with hwavy items on top etc

I’d still get a MacBook though and just be mindful of the screen

I just get AppleCare on my MacBook Air for £79.99 a year and then don't need to worry half as much

Mine is regularly in a backpack. I place a thin microfibre cloth between the screen and keyboard; I’ve had the same cloth since 2016 or so. No issues at all on any of my MacBook screens.

This. Same with me. A “ghost” blanket from Amazon will make a huge difference. My screen is cleaner and there is no transfer of skin oil or dust from the keyboard to the screen. 0 scratches or coating issues with my M2 Air. I think you would be fine without anything between the areas, but the screen will need more cleaning. As long as there is no pressure on the lid I feel there is enough clearance, or there would be a ton of complaints by now.
