Macbook Air Thunderport to iMac as Monitor?

Is it possible to turn an iMac into a monitor if its got a thunderport and I have a mac air?

Yes.

Hookup the Air to the iMac via a Thunderbolt cable and then with both computers running press cmd + F2 on the iMac keyboard to put the iMac in to target display mode.

Only on a late 2009 onwards 27" iMac though.
