MacBook Air to HDTV

I bought the Mini Display Port to HDMI & HDMI to HDMI cables to hook my MacBook Air to my HDTV.

I don't want mirroring.

I want my HDTV to be a separate display

I have the mirroring not ticked but when I do my HDTV only shows the background of my OS and not the dock nor the menu bar/windows.

What are the steps to fix this?

No need to fix anything, as the external display does not mirror your MBA's internal display, otherwise you would see the Dock and the Menu Bar on the TV too.

Just drag whatever you want onto the external display (most often on the right side) and go from there.

ah I figured it out, thanks. I moved a window to the right and it displayed it on my TV.
