MacBook Air to LCD tv display?

I just bought the new macbook air and i got an mini displayport to hdmi with it; however, when i plug it in, my lcd tv just stays black and sometimes shows visions of my air. When its black, it reads, "invalid format" at the bottom corner. I have tried to reduce the resolutions, but nothing seems to be working. Can anyone help?

Yeah, it's frustrating. Theres gotta be something that needs to be changed.
