I do indeed have a macbook aluminum with the black plastic part cracked but it's out of warranty and I was wondering if anybody could verify the above statement and if its worth going to get it checked out at the apple store.
 
Obviously it's the clutch cover.... You can purchase one from eBay for relatively cheap using the search term "A1278 clutch cover". They're the same whether they say "pro" or not.... Use ifixit.com for guides on how to replace it...
