Macbook and digital camera help

I am a new mac user about one week now.

When I plug my digital camera into the usb port nothing happens for some reason.
On my windows pc it automatically knows when its plugged in.
it is a canon powershot a570is
any ideas

Just FYI -- as far as I know, Canon cameras do not mount on the desktop as a drive. One needs to use software to access the photos. iPhoto, Image Capture, etc.
