I want to be able to upload my videos from my macbook onto an external hard drive and watch it from there as i m running out of room on my macbook. Is that viable? I want to be able to select a movie from the hard drive and then it plays on itunes or quicktime without the movie being located on my macbook.

Sure it's viable. You may have to adjust a setting in iTunes so that you don't make a copy of everything that you play into your iTunes Library on your internal drive. -GDF
