MacBook applications repeatedly crashing

Recently applications running on my late 2008 13" MacBook (OS X 10.8.3) have crashed repeatedly - especially MS Word (usually when I cut and paste text into a document), but also Firefox, Photoshop CS6, etc.

I've tried rebooting but the problem recurs... any idea what the issue could be and how it can be remedied?
