Me and my girlfriend both have Core Duo macbooks purchased june 2 years ago. We have both had our batteries replaced after the infamous x over the battery icon in the menu bar. After replacing my battery once, I have never had the problem again. My girlfriend has however had a total of five (!) batteries failing in her macbook. She got one replaced in the states, and that only took a minute or so. Here in Sweden on the other hand, we have had to hand in the macbook to the local service provider and then it took 2-3 weeks before we got it back.
After the fourth battery broke in February (after only using it 2 weeks) we decided to call apple. The person we spoke to told us that if this happens again we should call apple because in that case there is clearly something wrong with the logic board that causes the batteries to break. We got a new battery sent home.
This new battery broke mid May, so we called apple, told them what's going on and they told us we should hand it in to the service provider where they would run extensive tests on the computer to see if there's anything wrong with it.
The service center calls us back 2 weeks later, telling us that the battery was broken and that they replaced it. You can imagine how angry we got. We called apple, told them about the situation. The costumer relations guy we spoke to said he would call the service provider and see whats going on. One week later we hadn't heard anythign from neither apple nor the service provider, so we went to the service provider. There we got told they did run extensive tests on the macbook, but could not find anything unusual. They also told us they talked to some people at Apple and recommended them to replace the machine, which did not happen. Apple refused in other words.
So we take the macbook home, call Apple and demand a fully functional black macbook. They refuse to give us any further service because they claim the computer is fully functional at the moment. We made it clear to them that it isn't because the battery keeps on breaking, and we do not want to go through the whole replacement process again. Still they refuse to replace it.
Because my girlfriend's parents live in the States, we decided to ask her dad to call applecare in the states and tell them about our situation. After another 4-6 phone calls to apple we finally got the news yesterday that the macbook will be replaced!
It should be understood how discontent we are with Applecare after this whole incident. I spent at least 10 hours on the phone with apple, my girlfriend had to be without a computer for 2-3 months the past 2 years, and she couldnt use her macbook as a laptop another 3 months because she needed the power cord connected at all times.
