Hello, I've been on quite the journey to repair my Mid 2012 Macbook Pro's battery (or to at least use it normally) I believe the battery stopped working after me cracking up the thing to replace and reseat the RAM and possibly fix the HDD. I have a slight memory of the area where the battery is spark a little while I was at it. But I don't remember if that was when my battery just stopped working. This was all during 2019 however, this laptop has remained dormant for about a year... until now. I needed a laptop for school, I tried my Dell laptop that I had laying around, that didn't work. I only have 2 laptops so my only choice was the long-dormant Macbook Pro I had.
So I thought the battery needed to be reseated, I moved it a little and took it out. Nothing... I plugged in the thing and BAM, it was alive. I looked around for an HDD that worked (because of the S.M.A.R.T requirements) and found an 80GB one. Installed Mountain Lion and still wondered... what's really going on? And so I began doing some research, found a couple articles and forums but none of them were solutions to my situation(most were about resetting the SMC, doing that has no effect as it is plugged in). Although, while reading through these I saw that if the machine turned off immediately as it was unplugged, it is likely that the battery's dead. So I looked through e-bay for about a month and found a genuine battery for a decent price. Bought it, and just today it arrived. On my way home I was thrilled to finally have this Macbook working again. I cracked the package and cracked open my Mac.
As I tried to put the battery in, it wouldn't fit. In my head I was like did I just waste my money for a battery that doesn't even fit my laptop? Turns out it was just a screw in the way, my other battery would easily slide out so it was probably broken on the screw part. So I put it all together, sealed my Mac back up and took a sigh. No power still. I went to my charger and pressed the button again and it powered. As it was booting I unplugged the cord and it didn't instantly shut off. I was VERY happy that it didn't. But when the OS finally loaded, it went into (hibernate mode? it basically powered off but didn't show the apple logo but a loading bar when it rebooted.) I logged on confused at what the heck was going on and noticed that the battery icon said 100% but with an X on the battery. Oh no...
It was running Sierra (unsure which version, I recently replaced the disk and had just upgraded from Mountain Lion) so I updated to Mojave (also unsure which version it is running at.) and I still have the same problem. Am I resetting the SMC the wrong way? I mean I shut down my mac all the way and press the keys: Shift, Option, and Control keys on the left side and pressing the Power button. for 10 seconds but I hear nothing, not even the charger light changing to orange or anything.
P.S if anyone knows what's going on, please tell me. I am in desperate need for a working laptop I can take to school, and this is my only choice.
