Macbook Battery not working properly

I have having trouble with my mac book. Can anyone help me

This morning I went to turn on my macbook and it would not turn and the funny thing was is that it said it was changed, according to the lights on the bottom of my macbook. I put the power adapter into my macbook and than it did turn on. Once I logged on to my macbook, on the finder menu where it has the battery icon it now has a x in the icon which is something I have never seen before.

I also note that once I turn on my macbook, I can then take the power adapter off, and my macbook will work.

This is really strange, can anyone lend of assistance?

and follow the various stages - if you have a black "X" in the menu bar then the chances are the battery is gone - Apple will swop it for you (as far as I know even if outside the warranty period)

Not unusual.
