Hi everyone, my MacBook retina (mid 2012, 15", first retina pro model) showed the "service battery" sign. In reality, its battery runs out very quickly and some time just dies completely even if it has 30-50% battery, so basically a typical malfunctioning battery.

I am wondering is it worth replacing it? It costs 200 euros (~250 USD), and everything else in the MacBook works fine, considering it's 5.5 years old already. Thanks!

I replaced a battery on a mid 2010, 15” 18 months ago and the machine still serves my needs. Definitely worth it.

I would try to replace it myself... Just go to your favorite online marketplace (I prefer Amazon, as you can see the reviews of others) and buy a battery... Then replace it yourself.. Its really easy :) I just looked at Amazon.de and can find those fitting for your MacBook for around 60€ with good reviews! :)

That seems a bit steep to keep a 5+ year old computer running. As others here are suggesting, you might be better off spending a quarter of that money on an after-market battery, even if it probably won't match the Apple original spec.

Find one on Amazon with good reviews. Go for the one that is not the lowest priced but not the highest. $60 USD should get you there. Easy to install.

A few others here said "replace it yourself".
But doesn't the RETINA version of the 2012 MBPro have a "glued in" battery?
That's more difficult to replace than the battery on the NON-retina MBPro's.

If so, the E200 replacement cost isn't that bad... IF (as you say) the MBPro still works fine and you're thinking of keeping it for another year or two.
