Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the update for the MacBooks/Pro increased ALL THE Macs to 2GB of ram? Now the base model '$1099' only shipd with 1 GB?

The base one was 1 gig before, the only upgrade the base got was the 2.1ghz processor, and the larger HD.

That's correct "coltks2004"...

I was in the Apple Store the day after the release of the new MacBook line, and they didn't even have "signage" displayed next to the new computers, but they advised me to go online to look at the specs/configurations to be certain.

No, they made it seem that the base came with 2GB, but the wording was something like, "With faster processors across the line, and 2GB RAM standard in most models..."

My suggestion is never get the base macbook. Buy the 2.4 white from
Amazon and you get a $75 rebate and pay no sales tax.

Plus you have your 2 mb ram, a superdrive and a faster processor.

Unfortunately for me at the time, I couldn't afford anything but base (1st gen macbook). But, this baby has served me well. I was able to bump the RAM up to 2 gigs and it blazes, fastest computer I've ever owned :D
