I have a 2.2 GHz white macbook that I've had for about 10 months that I bought new. The palm rest cracked recently and I was able to get it fixed through applecare. However, the new casing was improperly aligned and I'm going to need to bring it back, since there's a bulge in the plastic right above the superdrive. But I was inspecting the rest of the computer and I realized that there are a bunch of cracks in the polycarbonate casing. I don't care about the appearance of the casing, since I don't buy my computers for later resale, but rather keep them until they crap out. Because of this I have never bought a sleeve or any sort of extra casing for my laptops, because I figured the polycarbonate is meant to stand up to the rigors of being put in a bag and carried around by a student for a day. But while looking over the laptops I realized there was a crack between the two pieces of glass/plastic of the apple logo on the top of the case, as well as multiple cracks across the bottom of the case right by the vent. I handle my computer very nicely and though the finish may have a couple of blemishes and look a bit beat up, it's just superficial, and I've never had a case crack before (I've had two iBooks before this one). Now, my questions are:
- will applecare cover the damage to the outer casing? I can't say that I have used protective sleeves to protect the casing, so I'm worried they might say that it was accidental damage, but I don't believe that using a protective sleeve would truly protect the computer.
- should I start using a sleeve? As I said above, I don't see how sleeves will protect my computer from the cracking I have now, since when the computer is in my backpack it would afford protection only from scratches, which do not lead to cracks. The pressure in my backpack on the case is the same whether there is a foam covering or not.
- have I taken Apple's branding of the macbook as a reliable consumer laptop too literally, and I need to baby it more?
Thanks
