Macbook "checks" DVD drive twice

Hi,
I've been having this problem with my Macbook for a while now.
When I start it up, it checks the DVD drive, lovely whirring sound. That's normal.

But then, when the desktop has loaded, it goes and checks the DVD drive again, another whirring sound, as if I've pressed the eject button.

Does anybody know what could be causing this?

Here are my specs:
Macbook Black 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM
250GB Hard Drive
OSX 10.5.7
