I'm trying to help a friend out with his macbook problems. He fell asleep listening to iTunes and when he woke up the next morning, the macbook was stuck on the folder with a question mark in it. I've tried booting up holding the option key, but with no success. I brought over my macbook startup disk (he lost his) and it goes to the "Install Max OS X" screen. The problem now lies in when I get to the "Select a Destination" screen, the hard drive is not showing up so I can install OSX.

I''m hoping that his hard drive isn't fried, but that's what I'm getting from this. His macbook is out of warranty, so I need some advice.

Definitely need some help here

Maybe the Apple Store would help, maybe replace it for free even though it's out of warranty?

Anyone?
