I tried many different setting of my macbook and Dell 2709w.
Let me tell you guys what should do and how to get in clamshell mode

1. Don't turn your macbook to sleep mode by clicking "Apple logo" and select "Sleep"
2. Don't turn your macbook to sleep mode by setting the Energy Saver.
3. It's not TRUE sleeping mode if your macbook slept by setting the Engery Saver with PIP mode of the monitor. (e.g. watching TV in PIP mode, and the macbook idle too long).

ok, what we should do?
- Set the Engergy Saver to "Better Performance", the macbook will turn your mon and harddisk to sleep but not the cpu.

how can we go to REAL sleep mode?
1. select other signal which is not be used.
2. you will see the macbook turn to sleep mode immediately
3. select back to macbook signal, and your mon will sleep now.
4. just press any key of your keyboard or mouse for wake up your macbook (usb and wireless both are OK)

enjoy.
i m poor in english, wish you guy can get the meaning.
