MacBook disconnects everything else on the network...

Hello - I just bought a MacBook. So far I am loving it.
Unfortunately a very strange thing happens. Whenever I download something with the Macbook every other device at my house becomes unable to connect to the internet until the download is finished. It doesn't matter if it is a WiFi device or not.
The connected devices are: a WinXP Netbook, an ubuntu9.10 desktop PC (please notice this is connected with an Ethernet cable, it's not wifi), a Wii and a Samsung Bluray reader.
To complicate things even further, I noticed that even the MacBook itself cannot do anything else (such as browsing the web w/ Safari and/or Firefox). I tried to download large files such as a movie from iTunes store and the iPhone SDK. The download rate is about 600Kb/sec.
I have a 6Mb/sec DSL w/ AT&T and the modem is a 2WIRE 1701HG. I do not have a clue on how to solve this problem. Granted, it's pretty cool to have a laptop that can hose wireless networks Any help is really appreciated. Thanks!

Does this issue occur at all with the other computers when they're downloading?

Also, on an unrelated note, I'd definitely recommend running WPA at the minimum for wireless security (if all your other devices support it) as WEP is a joke/false sense of security if somebody really wanted to hack onto your network.

Thanks for your reply. The problem does not occur when other computers are downloading (I try to download the same thing which is the iPhone SDK). I also noticed another problem: when trying to download large files with the Macbook, not only the other devices are prevented to go on the net (or to connect to the router's settings), but the download itself after a while freezes.
I noticed that trying to download the OS X updates and the iPhone SDK.
This is an extract of the activity monitored with the tcdump command. I noticed that at the end,when the download freezes, there is some 'strange' activity and I really do not understand the last line ("We're not home" ??):
