With retail sales down about 20% this year and knowing that Apple is not insulated from this recession, does anyone think the Macbook will be discounted in the coming weeks? I know historically sales are typically best around back to school time, but this is sort of an unprecedented situation.

I doubt it..The only time Apple discount their computers are during Black Friday and during the summer you can get a discount if your a student on their online store up to $200 off. This is what I know of...and their refurbs too

Wow, not even entertaining the possibility? Almost every retailer in the US is providing huge discounts, why wouldn't Apple follow suit? This is the worst retail environment for years, and I'm sure Apple will be struggling to keep up sales.

actually, apple is still on top on amazon, so I dont think they need to lower the price to sell macbooks. Your best bet is black friday :(

While the industry is slowing down as a whole, Apple's growth continues as more people adopt their products over the previously dominant competition. Their sales have been mostly flat year over year with a bit of growth in some areas. They don't need to cut prices.

As far as I could tell, Apple and Tiffany were the only stores not having a sale the past few weeks. Check Amazon for a good deal. I think I got the best deal on a MB over Thanksgiving, but I believe they are still offering rebates. And no tax is a quick 8.5% discount!

People don't buy Macs because they are on sale. Personally, I am appalled that Wal-Mart will be selling the iPhone.
