I purchased a very beat up white Macbook; 2.13Ghz Core 2 Duo, white, 2007. I know the previous owner attempted to fix the machine, and failed. I have managed to get it running again and it appears healthy and fine- but it does not recognize the optical superdrive. CD's do not appear on the desktop, the eject key does nothing, and "About this Mac" reports that there are no ATA or burning devices found.

I tried swapping the optical drive that was in the machine for another I had, and the results are the exact same. (However I can't say for 100% that this other optical drive is working normally either; it came from a dead 2.2Ghz Macbook. The model number of both drives is Super 857CA 678-0557B). The replacement drive came with it's own orange connector so the problem most likely is not the orange data cable...

The only part of the optical drive that attaches to the motherboard is the orange data cable right? I guess the optical drive gets power through that cable and also passes data? I know the drive is getting power because it does spin the discs.

Thanks for ANY advice or suggestions! :)
