MacBook Does Not Sleep after Specified Period of Inactivity

So,

I have the Energy Saver set to put the computer to sleep after 6 minutes of inactivity. Except, it never turns off. The screen does go dark after 6, but the computer says awake. I have absolutely no applications running, and it still fails to go asleep. Is there an reason this could be happening?

Mac Os X 10.5.8
2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
