and it will not install updates from software update. I tried manually installing updates but they don't take effect because I can't restart the computer all I can do is shut it off. Same thing, no?

Its been like this for like half a year but now I really want to stay up to date, especially for facetime! It says I need to install a security patch.

Tried resetting PRAM

Tried Booting from the disk and and running the thing that fixes ****. I forgot what its called.

Help obi-wan you're my only hope.

I should also note that everything happens smoothly when using software update. I put my password in. I click restart. nothing happens.

Its so frustrating.

I have run onyx. I have no idea what to do. im on 10.5.8. it wont go any further

HELP

Try restarting in Single User mode (Command s)

Then at the command prompt run:

/sbin/fsck -fy

(It should prompt you to do this if there's an issue)

You could also try holding the power button for 5 seconds to force shutdown - not sure if you're doing this?

Also running Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility can help

Would anyone else volunteer to help me solve this weird problem.
